Hi everyone! First Line Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. As someone who rarely judges books by their covers but who loooooves choosing their next book by reading the first lines, of course I want to join!
So… Let’s go! Read the first lines below and try to guess what book it is!

“I stood in the dark corner of my enemy’s house, and thought of murder. In his bed, Tybalt Capulet snored and drooled like a toothless old woman.”

In the Houses of Montague and Capulet, there is only one goal: power. The boys are born to fight and die for honor and—if they survive—marry for influence and money, not love. The girls are assets, to be spent wisely. Their wishes are of no import. Their fates are written on the day they are born.
Benvolio Montague, cousin to Romeo, knows all this. He expects to die for his cousin, for his house, but a spark of rebellion still lives inside him. At night, he is the Prince of Shadows, the greatest thief in Verona—and he risks all as he steals from House Capulet. In doing so, he sets eyes on convent-bound Rosaline, and a terrible curse begins that will claim the lives of many in Verona…
… And will rewrite all their fates, forever.
This week I’m going back a few years and sharing the first lines from one of my old favorites, Prince of Shadows. It’s a retelling of Romeo & Juliet written from the point of view of Benvolio and it’s fantastic! Verona’s world is brutal, unforgiving, filled with secrets, political alliances, violence and betrayals. Each path can lead to destruction, and one might act like a wolf to escape wolves’ wrath. I shall reread it soon.
I love this! Another book to add to my retelling TBR. It sounds wonderful and the cover is stunning! ❤️
I’m so glad you like!! I’ve read this one years ago and will probably reread it soon, I loved it so much then!
