Weekly Check-in #3 – These Feathered Flames & 8 Doors

Hey everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day! I’ve been more and more anxious these past few days because I’ll come back to school on Monday and well, I tend to overthink things sometimes *hides* But anyway – as every Wednesday, let’s take a look at the books I’m reading and the games I’m playing!

What am I currently reading?

The author said that there would be “a slow burn (f/f) romance, monsters trying to be human and bears you can ride” so I didn’t really have a choice, now did I? I just had to start it! It’s rare that I like fairytales retellings (I know, I’m such in the minority on this!) but so far I really enjoy following Asya and Izaveta in this novel based on The Firebird. Stories about sisters are special, you know?

What’s next?

Two very different novels are on my immediate TBR :

  • Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee : I have a confession – I’ve tried reading this book three years ago and didn’t understand anything. I DNFed it around the halfway-point because I couldn’t take it anymore. However, I’ve read many reviews stating that the second time around was the charm and my curiosity is still very much alive so I’m willing to try again.
  • Happy Endings by Thien-Kim Lam : I just got the arc of this one and I’m so excited! I love second-chance romances!

What am I currently playing?

Most of my gaming time this week has been spent on Outriders, but I just got 8 Doors and I’m so excited about starting it! It’s a metroidvania-style game influenced by Korean folktales and it looks fantastic, doesn’t it?

I love this aesthetic – hand-drawn art, especially with this color palette – and to be honest, after three weeks spent in a TPS, my eyes need the respite, lol. Plus I just can’t resist the urge of diving into a new metroidvania game – it feels like I haven’t played any in forever!

That’s it for this week! I hope you’re doing great! What are you reading? Have you started any good game? Tell me all about it in the comments!

  1. You find some really interesting games!

I’m curious about Ninefox Gambit, too, but I haven’t started reading it yet. I want to say I’ll get to it soon, but I have been bad at guessing what I’ll read next lately.

  2. oooh, happy to see you’re enjoying These Feathered Flames and I’m excited to hear your thoughts on it! I preordered a copy because 1) I am a hoe for retellings and 2) I really wanted the preorder swag but haven’t decided if it is a book I will try to prioritize reading lol
