Hi everyone! First Line Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. As someone who rarely judges books by their covers but who loooooves choosing their next book by reading the first lines, of course I want to join!
So… Let’s go! Read the first lines below and try to guess what book it is!
“I didn’t know how long I had been in the king’s prison. The days were all the same, except that as each one passed, I was dirtier than before.”
The king’s scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king’s prison. The magus is interested only in the thief’s abilities.
What Gen is interested in is anyone’s guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.
Why this book?
The Thief is the first book of a fantastic Fantasy series written by Megan Whalen Turner and LISTEN, this story and Eugenides/Gen, its main character, are everything to me, especially books 2 and 3 that I will always hold close to my heart. I have yet to read the last one because I’m not ready to say goodbye to this world, but if you like YA Fantasy with cunning characters and great storytelling, I can’t recommend these books enough. The first one is a bit different and ranks a bit below the others in my opinion, yet it’s still special to me because it’s written through Gen’s POV – the others are written in third person POV, and the POV characters are extremely well-chosen, especially in The King of Attolia – and I just love him, okay?
