Hi everyone! First Line Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. As someone who rarely judges books by their covers but who loooooves choosing their next book by reading the first lines, of course I want to join!
So… Let’s go! Read the first lines below and try to guess what book it is!
CW (for the excerpt) : graphic depictions of blood, death
“I never dreamed it would end like this, my lord: your blood splashing hot flecks onto my nightgown and pouring in rivulets onto our bed chamber floor. But creatures like us live a long time. There is no horror left in this world that can surprise me. Eventually, even your death becomes its own sort of inevitability.”
A lyrical and dreamy reimagining of Dracula’s brides, A Dowry of Blood is a story of desire, obsession, and emancipation.
Saved from the brink of death by a mysterious stranger, Constanta is transformed from a medieval peasant into a bride fit for an undying king. But when Dracula draws a cunning aristocrat and a starving artist into his web of passion and deceit, Constanta realizes that her beloved is capable of terrible things. Finding comfort in the arms of her rival consorts, she begins to unravel their husband’s dark secrets.
With the lives of everyone she loves on the line, Constanta will have to choose between her own freedom and her love for her husband. But bonds forged by blood can only be broken by death.
Why this book?
A Dowry of Blood comes highly recommended by several of my friends, and I cannot wait to read this reimagining of Dracula’s brides. I’m always wary of books dealing with abuse – and gaslighting in particular – but I’m going to trust them on this one because it looks fantastic!
CW (for the book) : graphic depictions of blood, gore, murder, disease, domestic abuse, gaslighting, manipulation, emotional abuse
